Why can’t I see any layers listed underneath the WMS I have added in QGIS?

When adding a WMS, QGIS uses a JPEG image encoding by default, which displays No data values in white (the background). When adding the WMS to your project, select PNG as the Image encoding. The background should display as transparent.
